L07 · Choosing the Right Chart

Practice — Medium · The Makeover

Skills focus. Recognizing the wrong species and rebuilding — the everyday work of inheriting other people's pages.

Ungraded. Build each "before" honestly first: seeing the failure teaches more than reading about it.

Three befores, three afters

  1. Before: a bar chart of [Total Revenue] by Category, left in alphabetical order (Decor first). Build it, look at it, then make it after-worthy and write its finding title. One sentence: what did alphabetization hide?
  2. Before: a column chart of monthly revenue for all 42 months, 2023–2026. Build it. Try, honestly, to spot the year-over-year growth trend in the columns. Then rebuild as the right species and write the title. (Bonus: add [Revenue LY] as a second line — suddenly the L06 measures are visual.)
  3. Before: a pie of [Total Revenue] by Subcategory — all 20 slices. Build it. Attempt to rank the top five subcategories by eye. Rebuild honest, title it.

Reflection

  • Each before was a correct-data chart making the wrong claim. For each, name the question the before-chart was accidentally answering.
  • Task 2's after used measures from Module 2 without modification. What did the makeover actually consist of, if not new computation?
